Event: The First National Conference on Space Mechanism organized by the Space Mechanism Division of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME) was held in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province from November 3rd to 5th, 2023. Professor Qiquan Quan and his doctoral student, Bo Tang, attended the conference. On November 5th, in Session 4, Bo Tang presented an academic report titled “Design and optimization of rotor blades for Mars quadcopter.”

Event: During the period from July 30th to August 1st, 2023, Prof. Qiquan Quan, Mr. Zhijun Yu, Mr. Kaijie Zhu, and Mr. Bo Tang conduct technical discussion at Jiangxi MAD Components Co., Ltd. in Nanchang and Anhui Xoar Aero Tech Ltd. in Wuhu. A technical seminar on motor light weighting is conducted at MAD, while a discussion on blade light weighting, dynamic balancing testing, and trimming is held at Xoar Aero Tech.

Workshop with GDU technical experts in Harbin

Event: On June 19, 2023, GDU technical experts Mr. Yuan Xue and Mr. Shuai Song are invited by Prof. Qiquan Quan to participate in a workshop on data flow and communication protocols of UAV in Harbin. The workshop is held at the Volga Manor, Harbin.

Mr. Yuan Xue and Mr. Shuai Song have a deep technical exchange with Prof. Qiquan Quan, Prof. Peng Liu, Prof. Rui Wu of Harbin Institute of Technology, engineers and graduate students of the Aerospace Mechanism Testing (AMT) laboratory in data flow and communication protocols. During the meeting, Prof. Qiquan Quan introduces the current progress of development of the Mars rotorcraft of Harbin Institute of Technology; Mr. Kaijie Zhu reports the general design of the Mars rotorcraft; Mr. Bo Tang reports the design of the rotor system of the Mars rotorcraft, and Mr. Huanhe Wang reports the design of the communication protocols.

After the meeting, Prof. Qiquan Quan accompanies Mr. Yuan Xue and Mr. Shuai Song to have lunch together at Volga Manor.

Event: On May 31, Yachao Dong, Hao Cai, Yuanxu Wu, Kaiyi Wang, Ming Lu, Yang Xu, Yuheng Wang, Lanchen Kou, the master students of Aerospace Mechanism Testing Laboratory (AMT), worked hard and managed to pass their thesis defenses. Among them, the dissertation of Yachao Dong won the award of “Excellent Master Degree Dissertation of Harbin Institude of Technology”. AMT held a photo shoot for everyone. Teachers and students from the AMT took part in the activity together.

Yachao Dong finished his thesis titled “Design of an attitude control system of Mars helicopter and experimental study” and decide to stay at Harbin Institude of Technology to pursue his PhD degree. Hao Cai finished his thesis titled “Design and experimental study of the Marsbird-IV rotorcraft” and will join China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology(CALT). Yuanxu Wu finished his thesis titled “Development and experimental study of adirectly coil-actuated attitude adjusting rotor” and will join Zetop Technologies Co., Ltd. Kaiyi Wang finished his thesis titled “Optimization of three-dimensional structure and two-dimensional airfoil for Mars rotorcraft blade” and decide to stay at Harbin Institude of Technology to pursue his PhD degree. Ming Lu finished his thesis titled “Design and experimental study of parallelly-actuated ultrasonic metal tube sealing welder” and will join Zetop Technologies Co., Ltd. Yang Xu finished his thesis titled “Design and experimental study of pneumatically-actuated ultrasonic metal spot welder” and decide to stay at Harbin Institude of Technology to pursue his PhD degree. Yuheng Wang finished his thesis titled “Design and experimental study of ultrasonic metal welder for wire harness” and decide to stay at Harbin Institude of Technology to pursue his PhD degree. Lanchen Kou finished his thesis titled “Design and experimental study of torque sensor for high temperature and cryogenic environment” and decide to stay at Harbin Institude of Technology to pursue his PhD degree.

Designer-in-chief of Tianwen-1 Zezhou Sun and his team visit our center

Event: On February 19, 2023, Mr. Zezhou Sun, the designer-in-chief of Tianwen-1, Mr. Zhencai Li, the deputy commander, and Mr. Dong Pan, the designer, come to visit the Research Center of Aerospace Mechanism and Control at Harbin Institute of Technology.

Mr. Sun shares the arduous process and plans of the Tianwen-1 Mars mission. On behalf of the research team, Dr. Quan puts forward some assumptions on the second phase of the Mars sample return mission. Mr. Zongquan Deng, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and his research team conduct in-depth technical exchanges and discussions with Mr. Sun, Mr. Li, and Mr. Pan on the second phase of the Mars sample return mission.

Event: The AMT Laboratory held an online year-end party at 2:00 pm on December 31. Yuheng Wang and Yuanxu Wu hosted the party. Kaijie Zhu read AMT’s 2022 annual report. In the “2022 Photography Contest”, teachers, students, engineers, and the research assistant voted online and selected excellent photographs: Bo Tang won both the Gold Medal and Bronze Medal, and Mengxue Li won the Silver Medal. Under the influence of COVID-19, the online year-end party warms everyone’s hearts to welcome the new year together.

Upgrading and reconstruction of valves of the Mars atmosphere simulator

Event: The Mars atmosphere simulator is a significant experimental setup for testing rotor performance in the simulated atmosphere of Mars. To improve the recovery speed of air pressure inside the tank after the experiment is completed, a larger size air inlet valve is replaced outside the tank, thus reducing the air pressure recovery time to less than 80 minutes. To solve a potential safety hazard that the experimenters are locked in the tank by mistake, a safety valve is installed inside the tank, which can be used for self-rescue in case of emergency to protect the life of the experimenters.
